Belarus plans to purchase at least 2.7 thousand units of freight railway rolling stock in 2024. This was announced today, September 25, by Deputy Prime Minister of the republic Anatoly Sivak.
"To date, a total of 1,510 wagons have been purchased," he said.
In turn, the Minister of Transport and Communications of Belarus Alexei Lyakhnovich said that the Ministry of Transport and the Belarusian Railways (BJD) are working on a possible large-scale assembly of motor-car rolling stock jointly with the Russian Federation. At the same time, he admitted that due to the sanctions there were problems with spare parts for imported rolling stock, including for Polish-made Pesa trains.
"But we have found an opportunity to replace something, to purchase something through friendly countries, so gradually we will put this motor-car rolling stock in order," the head of the Ministry of Transport emphasized.
It should be reminded that after the SMO began, the Ukrainian authorities confiscated a total of over 7 thousand Belarusian railcars, some of which were not owned by Belarusian Railways. Also on Ukraine still has Belarusian locomotives and cargo. In October 2023, the Belarusian Deputy Prime Minister reported that almost 2.9 thousand railway cars were purchased then. Taking into account the current statement of Sivak, Belarus has already purchased about 4.4 thousand cars, which means that more than half of the losses have already been compensated.
