American actor Nicolas Cage officially abandoned the surname Coppola given to him at birth in order to distance himself from the eminent relative — director Francis Ford Coppola. The actor told Variety about this.

"I officially changed my name last year. Now I am Nick Cage both in life and on the screen. It's better to be the head of your little family than a clown cousin on the sidelines of a stranger," the artist explained.

At the same time, the actor decided to leave his name "Nicholas" because his father gave him that name. However, he noted that it is possible to address him in different ways - both Nick and Nicholas.

"I am both! I think people know me by both names," Cage believes.

Nicolas Cage, the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola, took a pseudonym at the beginning of his career. He was attracted to the comic book character Luke Cage. The actor is also inspired by the work of composer John Cage. Throughout his career in films, the actor was referred to as Cage, excluding work in the film "Fun Times at Ridgemont School," which was released in 1982.
