The Swedish Coast Guard boarded a tanker in the Baltic Sea today, May 3, Reuters reports. The Jin Hui vessel under the Syrian flag is suspected of belonging to the Russian "shadow fleet".
The police boarded the Jin Hui vessel under the Syrian flag in Swedish territorial waters south of Trelleborg and launched a preliminary investigation into the lack of seaworthiness.
"The Coast Guard suspects that the vessel is sailing under a false flag, given a number of violations regarding the status of its flag, and, therefore, does not meet the requirements for seaworthiness set out in international rules and agreements," the guard said in a statement.
The Coast Guard said that the vessel, whose destination was unclear and which was not supposed to have cargo on board, appeared on several sanctions lists, including those of the European Union and the United Kingdom.
