The United States is urgently evacuating the military base in Bahrain after the Iranian strikes. It is reported by NPR.

"NPR has learned that hundreds of sailors have been evacuated back to The United States from its base in Bahrain after an attack by Iranian missiles and drones. In addition to the base in Bahrain, NPR has learned that evacuations have been carried out at other US military bases in the region, although the exact details are still unknown, " the publication says.

Bahrain hosts the base of the Fifth Fleet of the US Navy, which makes it a central hub for maritime security in the Middle East, "including the protection of commercial shipping," the newspaper writes.

About 8,000 people were stationed at the base in Bahrain before the US and Israeli attack on Iran on February 28. She was subjected to repeated blows on the very first day of the war. At the request of NPR, a representative of the US Navy said that 1,500 sailors, their families and several hundred pets were transferred to the US from a base in Bahrain.

It is noted that sailors have been arriving in Norfolk in Virginia, where the world's largest naval base is located, at least since mid-March. Several public groups that provide assistance to military personnel claim that they have returned, one might say, almost in their mother's clothes. In particular, a call was received asking them to provide them with basic supplies, such as hygiene products.

"The base asked to donate toiletries and other things for the sailors returning back, because they returned with nothing," said Derrick Johnson, a representative of one of the organizations.

For some of those who returned from the Middle East, a spaghetti dinner was arranged, said his deputy Keith Sheinsey.

"They literally told them: 'Take everything you can take in a backpack. You have to leave." They came without a uniform, nothing. The three people we met first came with clothes on their backs, with what they could put in this backpack," he recalls.

The Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society has provided $1 million to approximately 2,000 sailors and their families since the evacuation began, the group's chief operations officer said.

The Navy does not yet know what will happen to the cars and furniture left in a hurry in Bahrain, the Navy also does not inform the evacuees when they will return — and whether they will return at all — to their bases in the Middle East, the publication summarizes.
