The Higashiyama Zoo-botanical Park in the Japanese city of Nagoya will not be able to provide a female manula for the Moscow cat Timofey.
According to the representative of the zoo, the transfer of the animal is impossible for several reasons, RIA Novosti reports. Firstly, both manula cats in Higashiyama are rented, and the zoo has no right to dispose of them. Secondly, one of them, named Honey, has reached old age, and it is no longer necessary to count on offspring from her. In addition, the Japanese zoo itself needs to replenish the collection. Three kittens were born here last year, but they all turned out to be males.
The Nagoya Zoo stressed that the problem of manul shortage is typical for the whole of Japan. These animals are becoming more and more popular, but the number of individuals in the country's zoos is small.
According to the publication, of the seven Japanese zoos, only Higashiyama has more cats than cats (two cats and one cat), but transfer them to Moscow is impossible.
Earlier, the French zoo Spaycific'ZOO refused to provide a bride to Manula Timofey because of the feline herpes virus in local females. A similar refusal came from the Warsaw Zoo, where the female Jessie is involved in the European breeding program with priority for Polish males.
The problem with finding a bride for Manul Timofey is complicated by the fact that many manuls in Russia are closely related.
