Despite the fact that Moldova has taken control of the fuel terminal at the country's main airport, the planes are still refueled with jet fuel from Lukoil, which has come under US sanctions.
Lukoil continues to be the only supplier of aviation fuel at Chisinau International Airport. This was stated by the director of the airport Sergey Spoyale on the air of the Moldovan Realitatea TV.
According to him, the decision to maintain supplies belongs not to the airport administration, but to the authorities. Sergey Spoyale noted that the diversification of suppliers requires significant investments and a long-term period to create the necessary infrastructure.
"I do not think that in such a short time it is possible to build another infrastructure necessary for this kind of activity," said the director of Chisinau International Airport.
Earlier, in January, Lukoil handed over its fuel complex at the airport to Moldova.
"The Public Property Agency and Chisinau International Airport completed the inventory process and on Thursday, January 29 of this year, signed with LUKOIL-Moldova acceptance and transfer certificates of the oil complex located at the airport. Thus, the assets owned by LUKOIL on the territory of Chisinau airport became the property of the state in accordance with the decision of the Investment Review Board," the Moldovan Energy Ministry reported.
As EADaily reported, US sanctions against Lukoil came into force in October and the Russian company announced plans to sell international assets. Later, Lukoil announced that it had previously agreed on a deal with the American investment fund Carlyle, but was continuing negotiations with other potential buyers.
