The French president condemned "competition from the United States of America" through a trade policy that "requires maximum concessions and openly seeks to weaken and subjugate Europe."
"We are the only ones who do not protect their own market. We need to be more realistic. Protection does not mean protectionism," the French leader stressed.
Europe has "very powerful" trade instruments and has to "use" them when "they are not respected," he added.
