The head of NASA, Jared Isaacman, announced plans to send American astronauts on the longest space trip in American history, as well as fly to the Moon as early as 2026.
"This year, American astronauts will make the longest space trip in history and return to space around the Moon," Isaacman wrote on the social network X.
The record-breaking long flight will be timed to coincide with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, which is celebrated since the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, Isaacman said.
Before landing on the moon as part of the Artemis III mission in 2027, NASA plans to conduct a flyby mission called Artemis II, which will be the space agency's first manned mission to the moon in more than 50 years. This 10-day mission, scheduled to launch in February 2026, will carry four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, who will fly around the moon and return to Earth.
