Vilnius will take retaliatory measures if Minsk confiscates trucks of Lithuanian carriers. stuck on the territory of Belarus. This was stated by the Lithuanian Minister of Justice Rita Tamashunene.
She drew attention to the fact that the confiscation of property is a very painful issue for Lithuanians, and "it is not so easy to implement it."
"However, if these trucks are confiscated in Belarus, we must definitely take retaliatory measures. And, of course, take the same measures," she said.
According to the minister, it is necessary to adopt a new law on this issue.
"So far there are only assumptions that these trucks (trucks, trailers and tractors) will be confiscated in Belarus. So far, this is only in words," Tamashunene said.
She also explained that the Ministry has carefully studied the available assets and the possibility of using similar countermeasures in the event of a threat of confiscation of the property of our citizens living in Belarus or the assets of our enterprises in the neighboring republic. At the same time, the minister believes that there is no way to solve the problem diplomatically.
It should be reminded that at the end of October Lithuania closed the last two checkpoints on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border — Myadininkai (Kamenny Log) and Shalchininkai (Benyakoni). After that, more than 1.3 thousand trucks belonging to Lithuanian carriers remained in Belarus. As a result, all the trucks were moved to guarded parking lots, where they remain to this day even after the opening of the border on November 20. Minsk proposes to resolve the issue at the level of the Foreign Ministries of the two countries, but Vilnius refuses such negotiations.
