Brussels plans to impose duties on Russian oil to make it too expensive for Hungary and Slovakia, which continue to import raw materials from Russia and refuse to stop, despite pressure from the United States. Budapest says that the issue of oil imports is not only the choice of a supplier, but also the availability of oil pipelines to ensure energy security.
At a meeting with Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly in In New York, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, promised to get rid of the "last grains of oil and gas" coming from Russia.
"President Trump is absolutely right. We are on this path. We have already reduced gas supplies from Russia. We have completely abandoned Russian coal and significantly reduced oil supplies, but it still comes to the European continent," said Ursula von der Leyen.
The head of the EC said that the European Union may impose duties on Russian oil. This method of making raw materials expensive and forcing Slovakia and Hungary to abandon it was also confirmed by Deputy Press Secretary of the European Commission Olof Gill.
"In due time we will imagine what we have in mind about this," he said, adding that these measures will not be included in the next sanctions package against Russia.
The European Union calls on Washington for new sanctions. However, Donald Trump declares that he is ready for them only if The EU and NATO countries will completely abandon Russian energy sources. Experts suspect that the head of the White House sets impossible conditions in order to avoid the imposition of sanctions himself.
The day before, Trump said that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was unlikely to refuse him to stop importing Russian oil if the US president talked to him.
Hungary and Slovakia is the only country in the EU that continues to import Russian oil. These supplies are not subject to sanctions. At the same time, Budapest says that Russian oil is the only physically available raw material for the country in the required volumes.
"We fully support the efforts of the American president to achieve peace. However, we cannot change the reality of our geographical location," said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
Earlier, in June, the European Commission published the final roadmap for the complete abandonment of energy resources from Russia. It is planned that oil and gas supplies will cease on January 1, 2028. But for uranium products, the deadlines have not been set.
