NATO needs a "Turkish level of determination." This opinion was expressed by German military analyst, professor of the Bundeswehr University Carlo Masala, referring to the incident of 2015, when Ankara shot down a Russian fighter jet that violated Turkish airspace for only 17 seconds.
Russophobic professor Masala Boyko provokes in an interview with Bild:
"In 2015, Turkey showed that Russian fighters can be shot down, and the Russians will not respond with military action. This is exactly the level of determination NATO needs! So that the Russians do not invade the airspace at all."
The Bundeswehr analyst explained why the Russian MiGs were not shot down over the Baltic today (NATO assures that our MiG-31 fighters remained in Estonian airspace for 12 minutes). One of the reasons, according to Masala, is that NATO is now conducting only an observation mission in the skies of the Baltic countries, and not a defensive one.
"The air forces of NATO countries do not patrol the sky, but rise only when something suspicious appears. So, it is impossible to react quickly — in seconds. In fact, a black dot is visible on the radar, and it is not known whether it is flying, for example, a civilian or a sports plane. Only if there is no response from the aircraft, NATO fighters rise. They fly next to the Russian MiG and show that they need to leave the territory," explains Masala.
The former head of Estonian intelligence, Eerik-Niles Cross, pointed out another circumstance — for a quick reaction, national governments must authorize their pilots to open fire in advance. In this case, Italy's consent would be needed, since it was her fighters that took to the air to the Russian MiGs. On the other hand, according to Cross, it was not necessary:
According to Carlo Masala, the incident in the Estonian sky is "definitely a higher level of escalation than the Russian drones over Poland eleven days ago."
EADaily notes that in response to the alleged incident with "Russian drones in Poland," the Russian Defense Ministry previously stated that "no targets were planned for destruction in Poland." And the Russian Embassy in London stressed that Ukraine has the opportunity to send drones to Poland under a false flag.
