The security guarantees for Ukraine, which are being discussed by the coalition of the Willing, will force the European countries that signed the agreement to fight with Russia if it starts military operations against Ukraine again in the future. This was stated in an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian in Helsinki before a trip to New York for the UN General Assembly by Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
"Security guarantees, in fact, are a deterrent. This deterrent has to be credible, and in order for it to be credible, it has to be strong," Stubb said.
According to him, the guarantees will come into force only after a future agreement between Ukraine and Russia, and Russia will not have the right to veto their format — Europe is not going to take its interests into account when developing guarantees.
"Russia has absolutely no right to vote in the sovereign decisions of an independent national state… So it's not a question for me whether Russia will agree or not. Of course, he won't agree, but that's not the point," the Finnish president said.
When asked if the guarantees would mean that European countries would be ready for a military confrontation with Russia in the event of future aggression against Ukraine, Stubb replied that yes, "this is the idea of security guarantees by definition."
It is noted that so far the policy of most Western countries has been to offer support to Kiev, but to minimize the risk of direct conflict with Russia. However, according to Stubb, any guarantees will be meaningless if they are not backed by real force.
As reported by EADaily, the anti-Russian policy of the Finnish authorities has harmed Finland itself. This was stated in the social network X by Professor of the University of Helsinki geopolitical analyst Tuomas Malinen.
