Volkswagen Touareg of the first generation was presented back in 2002, it was developed jointly with Porsche. Both SUVs used the same platform, which was later used in the first-generation Audi Q7. At the time of launch, the Volkswagen Touareg was offered with two gasoline engines — a 3.2-liter VR6 and a 4.2-liter V8, as well as a 5.0-liter V10 diesel engine.
