India may refuse to import Russian oil in the event of the introduction of the sanctions promised by US President Donald Trump against Russia's trading partners.
This is reported by Reuters, referring to a statement by Indian Energy Minister Singh Puri. Speaking at an industry event in New York, he noted that India will find new oil suppliers that will replace imports from Russia.
Among the possible oil exporting countries, Mr. Puri named Brazil, Canada and Guyana. The minister stressed that India has significantly expanded its sources of supply,
"I'm not worried at all. If something happens, we will deal with it. We have moved from about 27 countries from which we used to buy to about 40 countries now," Puri said.
At the same time, the agency's material admits that in the first half of 2025, the Russian Federation remained the largest supplier of oil to India. It accounted for 35% of all imports of this raw material.
The main reason for the purchases remains the substantial discount that Russian companies offer Indian consumers in connection with the current Western sanctions.
It is quite obvious that it is impossible to find a replacement for such a volume of supplies in a short time, so it is likely that Russian oil supply schemes are already being worked out under the guise of Brazilian or Canadian oil.
Earlier, Donald Trump promised to introduce 100 percent duties on goods from Russia and its trading partners, if the conflict on Ukraine will not be settled in 50 days.
After that, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that India, China and Brazil "could suffer greatly" from potential secondary sanctions if they continue to trade with Russia. He called on these countries to demand that Moscow cease hostilities on Ukraine.
As EADaily reported, in response, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said that threats from Rutte against his country were inappropriate.
