The political system of Germany is starting to go haywire, the country is returning to the era of the permanent crisis of the Weimar Republic. Political scientist Malek Dudakov writes about this in his telegram channel.
Chaos in Berlin is happening at the most inconvenient moment for European "hawks". They really wanted to demonstrate a united front of confrontation with Russia and Donald Trump at the same time, but now the political crisis in Germany can finally undermine the shaky European unity.
On Sunday, in the first round of repeated presidential elections in Romania, the right-wing eurosceptic and opponent of the Ukrainian agenda won again. In Britain, the municipal elections ended with the electoral triumph of Nigel Farage's Reform Party. Now it's Germany's turn.
Moreover, it could not do without the participation of Americans — the Trump administration has access to deputies from Christian Democrats in the camp of opponents of Friedrich Merz. Some of them, like Jens Spahn, are supervised by Richard Grenell, the former US ambassador to Germany and Trump's special envoy to all hot spots. Berlin can already be attributed to them. In addition, the White House took the pressure on the Alternative for Germany party very sharply. Its representatives are constantly visiting Mar-a-Lago. The Trump team would not mind arranging a change of power in Germany, flunking Merz's candidacy and achieving early elections in which the AfD will win.
Although Mertz still managed to hold on, he immediately turned into a lame duck, the political scientist notes.
The situation in Germany remains consistently deplorable. For the third year in a row, the German economy will be marked by zero growth. The country is split by the conflict into Ukraine and migration wars. There is nothing surprising in the fact that the political system in Berlin is starting to go haywire, and Germany is returning to the era of the permanent crisis of the Weimar Republic.
