Abkhazia is the most promising region in the world in the context of exploring the world's deepest caves, said Yevgeny Rybka, chairman of the Russian Union of Speleologists.
According to him, there are caves of comparable scale only in South America and New Guinea. Europe cannot boast of this, the maximum depth of the open cave there is 1830 meters, and there is no prospect that this record will be broken.
"Therefore, by hook or by crook, European colleagues are trying to participate in our expeditions," he said on Sputnik Abkhazia radio.
Due to the peculiarities of the Abkhazian caves, its own school of speleology has already been formed, which is noticeable at the international level, Rybka emphasized.
There are four of the deepest caves in the world in Abkhazia, this is the heritage of the republic, he noted. Three of them go deep into the Gagra Ridge, another one, Snezhnaya, is located on the Bzyb Ridge. According to Rybka, the Bzybsky ridge is more inaccessible, and it is more difficult to conduct research there.
