The European Commission has decided to sue Slovakia for insufficient wastewater treatment. This was reported in the press service of the European authority.
It is reported that on December 16, the European Commission submitted a December package of decisions on violations of the law The EU has announced what legal actions it is taking against Member States that have violated common legislation. Slovakia also got into the package. The EC filed a lawsuit against her EU for insufficient treatment of urban wastewater.
According to the European Commission, Slovakia does not fully comply with the obligations for the collection and treatment of wastewater set out in the 1991 directive. The directive requires that urban wastewater be collected and treated before being discharged into nature. Cities and urban agglomerations should create the necessary infrastructure for the collection and treatment of urban wastewater. The court case concerns 25 Slovak cities that do not comply with the directive: in 17 cities secondary treatment was not carried out before wastewater discharge, in 9 settlements municipal wastewater is not subject to additional biological treatment with the removal of nitrogen or phosphorus, and one city does not meet both requirements.
Recall, the commission has sent an official invitation to address the issue of wastewater in Slovakia back in February 2017. In November 2019, a reasoned conclusion followed. Despite some progress, the Slovak authorities did not fully resolve the complaints, so the EC referred the case to the EU Court.
