A new substation "Tskaltubo 500" has been commissioned in the west of Georgia, which will ensure uninterrupted power supply in the region, as well as provide other countries, including European states, the country's authorities said.
The substation has been under construction since 2022. The substation was opened by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and First Deputy Prime Minister, Head of the Ministry of Economy of Georgia Levan Davitashvili.
"The new Tskaltubo substation is one of the most important facilities for the development of Georgia's power transmission network. We have an ambitious plan to ensure that by 2030, electricity generation in Georgia's electricity consumption has exceeded, thus Georgia will become a completely self—sufficient and independent country in terms of electricity," Kobakhidze said.
According to Davitashvili, Georgia has the resources to create new energy capacities that will allow it to become a reliable partner of other countries, including European states. The Georgian authorities plan to double the capacity of Georgian power generation by 2030, increasing it to 10 thousand MW.
The new substation was built with the financial support of the World Bank within the framework of the Energy Supply Reliability and Financial Rehabilitation Project, it is designed to ensure energy exchange with Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey and provide direct communication with the European Union through the Black Sea submarine cable.
