Scheduled inspections of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are carried out at the Belarusian NPP and at the scientific institution "Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research — Sosny". This was reported today, November 20, in Gosatomnadzor of Belarus.
It is noted that these measures are provided for by the Agreement on the Application of Safeguards in connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
"In fulfillment of international obligations, regular scheduled IAEA inspections are taking place at the Belarusian NPP on November 20 and at the JINR-Sosny scientific institution on November 21," the report says.
The Belarusian department reported that the agency's inspectors will conduct a physical inventory of nuclear material, as well as check how accounting documents are kept. The purpose of the inspections is to check how Belarus' obligations that nuclear installations are not misused and nuclear material is used only for peaceful purposes are being respected.
It should be reminded that Belarus started the construction of a nuclear power plant near the town of Ostrovets with two reactor plants with a total capacity of 2,400 MW jointly with Russia in 2013. The first power unit was put into commercial operation in June 2021, and in November 2023 the government approved the acceptance certificate of the second power unit. In total, the Belarusian NPP has already produced 37 billion kWh of electricity.
