Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the post of chancellor of Germany from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), said he was ready to transfer German TAURUS long-range missiles to Kiev. This is reported by the NTV channel.
According to Merz, if the attacks on Ukraine do not stop, the first step of the government will be the removal of existing restrictions on the range of use of weapons. The second step is the delivery of TAURUS long—range cruise missiles. At the same time, the decision to supply TAURUS should be made at the European level.
Merz stressed that during the upcoming federal election campaign he will seek a significant increase in spending on weapons.
The politician added that the current German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who refuses to supply TAURUS to Ukraine, lacks a strategic vision. Merz said that the government informs Russian leader Vladimir Putin of all the details and publicly argues about the next steps.
Earlier, Vladimir Zelensky, during his last meeting with Scholz in Berlin on October 11, demanded permission to strike deep into Russia, including with TAURUS missiles, and to approve Kiev's accelerated admission to NATO. Bild, citing sources, said that Berlin "ignored" the demands of the Ukrainian side.
The next Bundestag elections will be held on September 28, 2025. Based on their results, a new government will be formed, and a new chancellor will be elected. The current head of government previously announced that he would run again from the SPD for this post. Merz will become a candidate from the opposition conservative CDU/CSU bloc.
