Military spending has a higher priority than government spending on parental benefits. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Merz commented on the increased defense spending and, at the same time, the declining parental allowance. According to him, the Bundeswehr is not currently demonstrating the necessary combat readiness.
"And what is the point of the most generous child care allowance if we are losing our freedom and peace in Europe is under threat?" — he asked himself during an interview with ARD TV channel.
According to the Chancellor, the current security situation requires a revision of budget priorities in favor of strengthening the country's defense capability. At the same time, Merz noted that the modernization of the German armed forces should be carried out more economically. One of the reasons for cooperation with Ukraine, he called the opportunity to learn from its experience in this matter.
Recall that the German authorities continue to follow the path of increasing confrontation with Russia. The country is gradually militarizing. Earlier, Merz said that Berlin intends to reach ahead of schedule the new target of defense spending within NATO at 5% of GDP.
