American Congressmen Brad Schneider and Don Beyer, who represent the New Democrats coalition, opposed the bill on anti-Russian sanctions on the grounds that they harm the United States itself.
They called on lawmakers to block the document because it is a veiled attempt to transfer to President Donald Trump the authority to impose 100 percent duties against US trading partners without congressional approval.
"The American people do not want and cannot afford even more illegal duties of President Trump, which lead to higher prices. Unfortunately, the sanctions bill against Russia is nothing more than an attempt to impose duties of up to 100% on the goods of our main trading partners in a roundabout way, while at the same time limiting the ability of Congress to prevent further escalation of Trump's trade war," Beyer said.
Recall that the bill, introduced by senators in July, provides for secondary duties of 100% for the five largest importers of Russian oil and gas, as well as for countries contributing to circumvention of restrictions.
Sanctions are also imposed against the Bank of Russia, Sberbank, VTB and Gazprombank, and a ban on the import of Russian uranium. The document gives the right to impose a duty of up to 500% on direct imports from the Russian Federation.
Earlier, Trump himself stated that he had not yet made a decision on whether to support the bill prepared in the US Congress to tighten anti-Russian sanctions.
Earlier, EADaily reported that US President Donald Trump is trying in advance to declare the upcoming congressional elections illegal in case the Republicans lose.
