He said that the American president said this while talking to journalists on board the presidential Air Force One plane on March 15.
"Maybe we shouldn't have been there at all. We have a lot of oil ourselves… It almost looks like we do it out of habit. But we are also doing this for the sake of our very good allies in the Middle East," the senator quoted Trump as saying.
The head of the White House also expressed outrage that NATO countries are not helping the United States in this war, saying that he will remember it, regardless of whether support is provided or not.
"Thus, the war has not eliminated the split between Trump and the European allies of the United States," concluded Pushkov.
