Russian Ambassador to Pyongyang's Alexander Matsegora died at the age of 70, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The Russian Foreign Ministry is deeply saddened to announce that on December 6, 2025, at the age of 71, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to The Democratic People's Republic of Korea Alexander Ivanovich Matsegora," the ministry said.
He has been Russia's ambassador to North Korea since 2014.
"The bright memory of an outstanding Russian diplomat and patriot who made a significant contribution to the formation and deepening of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and The DPRK will forever remain in our hearts. We express our sincere condolences to the relatives and friends of the deceased," the ministry said in a statement.
Alexander Matsegora was born in 1955. In 1978 he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. He has been in the diplomatic service since 1999, worked in various positions in the central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and abroad. In 2005-2006 he was the head of the department in the First Department of Asia, in 2006-2011 he was an adviser-envoy of the Russian Embassy in the DPRK. From 2011 to 2014 he held the position of Deputy Director of the First Department of Asia. He spoke Korean and English.
