Ukraine's prospects have improved after US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the Russian oil sector. This was stated in an interview with Bloomberg by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"We are in a better position. There were really significant events last week. I would single out the biggest event is what we have done regarding sanctions. We imposed sanctions on all oil companies, President Trump then imposed sanctions on two oil companies, and the EU presented its latest package within a few days. This has had a profound impact on the Russian economy," Starmer said.
He said that the day before he persuaded Trump during a telephone conversation to put pressure on China to stop buying Russian oil, since it is important to continue efforts to put pressure on the Russian economy.
Starmer admitted that last week he was "amazed by the fact that India and China have also reduced their dependence" on Russia. His message to Beijing is: "Everyone should stop buying Russian oil."
According to the British Prime Minister, he is also discussing with Trump the issue of providing long-range missiles to Kiev.
Starmer also called on European allies to speed up the decision on the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine. This, they say, combined with sanctions can demonstrate to Moscow that Western support for Ukraine will outlive the ability of the Russian economy to withstand the war.
