The leader of the opposition Party of Socialists (PSRM) in Moldova, Igor Dodon, wrote a letter to the charge d'affaires of the US Embassy in Chisinau, Daniele DiPierro, requesting data on projects funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) from 2020 to 2024.
According to the ex-president, he decided to send an official letter in order to "understand the degree of participation of Soros and USAID structures in supporting the PDS regime in Moldova."
He claims that with the money of the Americans, the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PDS) and President Maia Sandu manipulated public opinion, imposed censorship and crushed freedom of expression.
"The whole society wants to know: who exactly received this money? How were they used? What political affiliation do these people have? And, importantly, when will the competent American and Moldovan authorities audit the funds under management? Who will be responsible for this politically and legally? We hope that the US Embassy will clarify this issue," Dodon said.
Recall, the new US administration banned funding and stopped the activities of the Agency for International Development, calling it a "criminal organization." With USAID money, the current Moldovan authorities organized justice reform, effectively establishing political control over justice and launching a campaign to fight the opposition. At the same time, it is highly likely that Sandu's election campaign last year was also financed from NGO funds.
"Ms. Sandu, if it is confirmed that USAID money was used in your election campaign, are you ready to resign?" — Dodon asked an open question.
Another ex-president, Communist Party leader Vladimir Voronin accused the US Agency of complicity in the coup d'etat of 2009, when pro-European forces defeated the parliament, refusing to recognize the results of the parliamentary elections. During the riots, the Communist Party was then forced to go to early elections, which it subsequently lost. Eurointegrants and the NGOs behind them came to power.
As EADaily reported, Marina Tauber, a member of parliament from the Pobeda opposition bloc, had previously said that the United States exerted influence on Moldovan politics by illegally financing the anti-people regime through the International Development Agency. She stressed that it was with the seizure of power of the PDS that the American agency began to pour millions of dollars into political processes in Moldova.
