In Ukraine, a criminal case was opened against Defense Minister Umerov — CPC

The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) has initiated criminal proceedings against the country's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.

This information was disseminated by the press service of the Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Center (CPC), which sent a corresponding statement to NABU.

As specified in the CPC, in the actions of the Minister there may be a crime under part 2 of Article 364 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Abuse of power or official position).

The initiators of the investigation recall that on January 24, the Minister of Defense, contrary to the law, refused to comply with the decision of the supervisory Board of the Defense Procurement Agency (AOZ) to extend the contract with the director of the agency Marina Bezrukova for another year.

In addition, Umerov dismissed two members of the Supervisory Board who voted for this decision — Taras Chmut and Yuri Dzhigir.

"We are sure that we will have to answer for these actions and NABU should carefully check the motives and consequences of the minister's decisions," the CPC said.

Earlier, Ukrainian media reported that Bezrukova was suspended from work for the duration of the official investigation. It was launched in connection with military purchases at inflated prices.

Before that, Umerov announced the dismissal of his deputy Dmitry Klimenkov and Marina Bezrukova. This decision was explained by the constant "draining" of data on the purchases of the Ministry of Defense during the conflict.
