The EU countries have reached a compromise on the extension of anti-Russian sanctions, Hungary is expected to withdraw objections to this decision in exchange for the provision of The EU on Energy security guarantees. This was reported by Bloomberg, citing sources.
"Hungary is expected to give the go—ahead for the extension of sanctions on Monday," a source quoted Bloomberg as saying.
According to another interlocutor of the agency, in exchange for this, the EC will make a statement "with several assurances on the energy security of the bloc." In particular, it will reaffirm the EU's commitment to help Ukraine restore and stabilize its infrastructure, "as well as address issues of gas and oil supplies," TASS reports.
Earlier today, before a meeting with EU colleagues, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that Budapest would decide to extend sanctions against Russia depending on whether it would receive guarantees of its energy security from the European Commission in the future.
As Bloomberg notes, in addition to extending existing sanctions The EU is simultaneously working on a new package of restrictive measures, which may be adopted as early as next month.
Recall that the sanctions EU sanctions against Russia are extended every six months.
