To ensure peace on Ukraine could have a UN mission that would include military personnel from the countries of the Global South. This was stated to Die Welt by the head of the EU Military Committee, Robert Briger.
"A mission under a UN mandate is possible, which will include not only Europeans, but also soldiers from the Global South or, for example, the Caucasus. The EU soldiers will undoubtedly be able to make a significant contribution," said Briger, quoted by Strana.
He noted that Europe alone will not pull a peacekeeping mission. Countries The EU can provide "significant forces" to monitor the ceasefire, but monitoring the demilitarized zone along the front will require a military presence "in the high five-digit range."
"This means that they would also have the right to implement a ceasefire with the use of weapons and air support," the general added.
According to him, "currently all this sounds very theoretical," but "such a scenario can be implemented."
Briger considers it "unlikely" that US President Donald Trump will "end the war in Ukraine soon."
"It would give the advantage of ending the deaths. The disadvantage, however, would be that the conflict would continue and, in the worst case, last for decades, for example, as between North and South Korea," the head of the EU Military Committee noted.
The hot phase of the war in Korea ended in 1953 and since then there has been no fighting between the north and the south, the "Country" reminds.
