Why an uninterrupted GPS signal is not important for Ukrainian UAVs — expert

Last night, the largest, according to some media, attack of Ukrainian UAVs took place. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation counted 144 aircraft-type drones over nine regions of the country. Why do they fly so far unhindered? The opinions of experts are published Pravda.Ru .

According to Igor Nikulin, a member of the UN Disarmament Commission, a political and public figure, in flight these drones are guided by GPS satellites. Jamming it is not an easy task, he admitted. And, most likely, useless, because modern UAVs are equipped with other means of navigation, political analyst Alexander Pylaev points out.

"There are inertial systems — that is, the flight task is laid directly inside the body of the drone itself," he explained. "They are quite reliable, that is, roughly speaking, a digital model of the terrain over which the UAV should fly with specific bindings is embedded in the electronic firmware, and it moves along it. This does not require constant contact with the satellite, that is, it can be guided by some landmarks - but these are the nuances, what landmarks can be laid there, I can't tell you for sure. In addition, there are optoelectronic systems, that is, some of the drones can be controlled by real operators, the same principle of FPV — that is, there is a video channel that allows you to adjust the flight of the drone."
