Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder (held the post in 1998-2005), whom the Kremlin would like to see as a mediator in negotiations with the European Union, is in Moscow. This was reported by the NTV channel.
NTV correspondent in In Moscow, Rainer Munz claims to have seen Schroeder at the Kempinski Hotel. It is possible that the ex-chancellor went to Russia to participate in The St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), which will be held from 3 to 6 June.
As EADaily reported, earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin, answering journalists' questions, said that Schroeder was the preferred candidate for possible negotiations between the European Union and Russia. He added that the Russian side has never been closed from negotiations.
At the same time, the German government opposed the involvement of the ex-Chancellor in mediation in relations between Russia and the EU.
