Britain and its allies have been tracking three Russian submarines for a month as part of a "secret operation" to monitor underwater cables in the North Atlantic. This was stated today at a press conference by the head of the country's Defense Ministry, John Healy, according to the British radio station LBC.
According to Healy, the UK tracked a Russian attack submarine and two spy submarines that passed near important infrastructure in the North Atlantic. During the month-long operation, 500 British troops tracked the vessels in an attempt to "contain negative activity," as a result of which the Russian submarines eventually retreated to their home waters.
It is noted that British Air Force aircraft and Royal Navy ships identified a Russian attack submarine entering international waters in the north a few weeks ago. Britain worked closely with Norway to track her movements. To track the attack submarine in the area of British territorial waters, the Royal Navy deployed the Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans, RFA Tidespring and Merlin helicopters and RAF P8 aircraft.
At the same time, Healy said that there is "no evidence of damage" to British cables and pipelines.
The minister believes that the purpose of Russian submarines is to monitor critical submarine cables. He believes that the attack submarine, known as the Shark, is being used to divert attention from two espionage known as GUGI. The minister said that the British military "dropped sonar buoys" to inform Russia that their "secret operation has been uncovered."
"We see you, we see your activity on our cables and pipelines," Healy said, addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly.
"Putin has failed," the minister added.
At the same time, he explained that the intelligence collected by the submarines will be used to assist the Russian government in "sabotaging" infrastructure during periods of conflict.
It is believed that the surveillance was conducted under the guise of events currently taking place in the Middle East, the radio station reports.
