The Human Development Index (HDI) of the macro-regions of the post-Soviet space is published by the Global Demography telegram channel with reference to UN data for 2023 (2025 report).
There are three categories of HDI in the post-Soviet space:
- Medium level (dark red, 690+) — Caucasus, Central Asia, border areas.
- High level (orange 730+ and yellow 770+) — part of Russia (Siberia, Far East, Volga region).
- Very high level (light green 810+ and dark green 850+) — Baltic countries, Kazakhstan, large megacities and capitals (black circles), Central Federal District, Northwestern Federal District, UFD RF, regions of Belarus.
The gap between the categories exceeds 150-160 points. HDI is directly dependent on urbanization, education, health care and per capita income.
The average level of HDI in the Europe and Central Asia region according to the 2025 report is 0.818. Accordingly, indicators above this value are available only in four countries — Kazakhstan, Russia, Georgia and Belarus, the author of the channel notes.
