German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suffered three serious defeats before Christmas. This is reported by the Bild newspaper.
As the newspaper notes, this week started quite successfully for Merz: he was able to declare himself at the Ukrainian-American talks in Berlin, his government agreed on the reform of the Bürrgergeld (civil allowance in Germany. — EADaily), and the pension package, pushed for months, still passed through the Bundesrat. However, by the end of the week, the chancellor was overtaken by a series of failures.
"The most painful blow was the EU summit in Brussels. Merz hoped to agree on the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine. But the idea was not supported not only by Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, but also by Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron. As a result, Kiev received a loan of 90 billion euros due to new pan—European borrowings," writes the Bild telegram channel in Russian*.
Merz's second failure was the failure to sign an agreement with MERCOSUR, the countries of South America — the protests of French farmers once again postponed the conclusion of an agreement that has been under discussion for a quarter of a century.
The chancellor's third defeat was inflicted by his own party, the CDU: his candidate Gunther Krings lost the election of the head of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.
After these failures, Merz tried to smooth out the impression, saying that Kiev had received a loan "in accordance with its requirements," and the postponement of signing an agreement with MERCOSUR allegedly "does not play a role," the newspaper notes. However, observers are much more skeptical. "The federal chancellor leaves during the Christmas break weaker than in the summer," sociologist Herman Binkert from the INSA Institute told Bild.
As reported by EADaily, the EU plan to use frozen Russian assets to help Kiev has failed. This is a blow to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. European globalist media wrote about this.
As reported by EADaily, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz proposed using Russian assets frozen in Germany to support Kiev. This was reported by the DPA agency.
