A number of cities in eastern Australia were under a record layer of snow for several decades, Reuters reports, citing authorities.
"A number of cities in eastern Australia were covered with the thickest layer of snow in decades… this led to flooding, blocking of cars and power outages in thousands of homes," the agency writes.
Reuters notes that up to 40 centimeters of snow fell in the northern part of the state of New South Wales on Saturday, which has not happened since the mid-1980s.
The New South Wales Rescue Service said they had registered 1,455 incidents, more than 100 cars were stuck due to snow, houses were damaged as a result of the storm, flood warnings were issued in a number of areas.
According to the agency, snow also fell in the neighboring state of Queensland for the first time in ten years. Tens of thousands of homes were without electricity.
