The intervention of wealthy businessmen in politics has become a familiar phenomenon, but the support of American billionaire Elon Musk for the right-wing German Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is disgusting, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said, reports Eßlinger Zeitung.

"We are very glad that the United States liberated our country and helped us to become a democracy again. And that is why I am so furious that Elon Musk stands for the extreme right, and also does not respond properly to the murder of so many Jews and other people in Europe by the Germans in the past," Scholz said.

In his opinion, Musk's actions harm the development of democracy throughout the European Union.

Musk has repeatedly expressed support for the AfD, called this political force a supporter of "political realism," and Scholz an idiot. At the end of January, the billionaire connected via video link to the party's election event in east Germany.

"Too much attention is being paid to past guilt, and we need to get rid of it," Musk urged the audience.

In less than a month, on February 23, elections to the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament, will be held in Germany. The vote was scheduled after the collapse of the "traffic light" coalition of Social Democrats, liberals and Greens.

According to the results of the polls, the opposition CDU/CSU — the bloc of the center-right parties "Christian Democratic Union of Germany" and "Christian Social Union in Bavaria" is leading by a large margin (30.7%). Alternative for Germany is in second place with 20.2%, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is in third place with 16.3%, it includes the Chancellor. 13.7% decided to vote for the Greens, the level of support for other parties does not exceed 5%, RBC reminds.

The Economist predicts the CDU/CSU victory with a 97% probability and approximately 224 seats out of 630. The AFD may double the number of parliamentary seats to 151, and the SPD will take third place with 119 seats for the first time since the founding of the Bundestag in 1949, analysts expect the publication. The Economist reminds that all parties refused in advance to engage in a dialogue with the "Alternative" about the coalition, which almost completely deprives her of a chance to enter the government.
