Trump "advised" Russian President Putin not to escalate the conflict on Ukraine and "reminded him of Washington's significant military presence in Europe," one of the sources said. The presidents discussed "options for peace in Europe," Trump expressed interest in further conversations to discuss "an early resolution of the war in Ukraine," several people said.
"The Ukrainian government was informed about the call to Putin and did not object to the conversation taking place, two people familiar with the matter said. Ukrainian officials have long understood that Trump would interact with Putin on a diplomatic solution for Ukraine, sources said, "the newspaper writes.
It is noted that on Thursday, Trump told NBC that after the election he spoke with about 70 world leaders, including the head of the Kiev regime of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky.
As EADaily reported, Vladimir Putin's congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the presidential election during the Valdai plenary session can be considered official, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"Everything the president says is official," he told reporters, answering the relevant question.
Earlier, Putin, during a speech at a meeting of the Valdai International discussion club, congratulated Trump on his election as president of the United States.
