US President Donald Trump said that his country would have to stop trading with Spain because of the refusal to increase defense spending.

"We are going to stop all trade with Spain, we do not want to have anything to do with Spain," the American president said.

Trump did not like the fact that Spain was the only country in NATO that did not agree to raise spending to 5%.

"I don't think they would agree to raise them to any level at all. They wanted to keep 2%, and at the same time they don't even pay 2%," Trump said at a meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House.

According to Trump, Spain has actually stated that the US cannot use their bases.

"And that's okay. We could use their base if we wanted to. We could just fly in and use it. No one is going to forbid us to use it. But we don't have to do that. But they were unfriendly… There is absolutely nothing in Spain that we need, except wonderful people. They have wonderful people," Trump said.

Trump also claims that all countries want to maintain existing trade agreements with Washington. At the same time, he noted that their conditions could be tightened.

Merz, for his part, supported the US embargo against Spain during the meeting, noting that this should "convince" them to increase spending on NATO.
