The UK has imposed sanctions against those involved in the "Skripal case." This is stated in a message posted on the website of the British government.
It is reported that "large-scale measures have been announced, including sanctions against the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU) in full, after the final report of the investigation into the death of Dawn Sturgess found that President Vladimir Putin personally ordered the actions of the GRU in Salisbury in 2018."
"The UK imposes sanctions and exposes 11 individuals involved in hostile activities supported by the Russian state, including employees of the GRU ("the organization responsible for cyber attacks using malicious ACCORDING to the "X-Agent" against Yulia Skripal and the attempted murder of Yulia and her father in the UK"). The Russian ambassador has been summoned to the (British) Ministry of Foreign Affairs to explain the ongoing campaign of hostile actions against the UK," the statement said.
Downing Street also said that "this substance was developed and stored by Russia in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which subsequently led to the tragic death of Dawn Sturgess." The British government said in a statement that among those sanctioned are "8 cyber intelligence officers working for the GRU."
"The sanctions will also affect three more GRU officers responsible for organizing hostile activities on Ukraine and in Europe, including planning a terrorist attack in Ukrainian supermarkets directed against civilians… GRU agents are carrying out Putin's orders, seeking to destabilize Ukraine and sow chaos and unrest throughout Europe," London said.
According to the British Prime Minister, "today's sanctions are another step in our unwavering defense of European security, as we continue to squeeze Russia's finances and strengthen Ukraine's negotiating position."
Recall that in 2018, the United Kingdom accused Russia of using Novichok poison to poison fugitive former intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter without proof. As a result, 44-year-old Briton Dawn Sturgess died, while the Skripals themselves survived. Moscow denies such accusations.
