The growth of supplies via the Black Sea route allowed Gazprom to compensate for more than a third of the losses from Ukrainian transit. Also, the Russian company was played up by higher gas prices in Europe. In money, Gazprom could compensate for half of the losses.
Kiev's refusal to transit Russian gas has reduced Gazprom's supplies to Europe. However, the Black Sea route allowed the company to compensate for a significant part of the losses.
The increase in supplies was affected by the redirection of volumes for Slovakia to the Turkish Stream and the growth of requests from Gazprom customers who receive Russian gas through the Black Sea gas pipeline.
Thus, deliveries via the European line of the Turkish Stream increased by 420 million cubic meters in the first half of the year compared to 2024 — up to 8.2 billion cubic meters.
At the same time, Turkey has increased its purchases even more. According to the regulator EPDK, imports of Russian gas in January-June 2025 increased by as much as 2.3 billion cubic meters. Fuel consumption has increased sharply in the country due to a drop in hydropower capacity.
Thus, Gazprom managed to increase exports via the Black Sea route by 2.7 billion cubic meters in the first half of the year. And this is more than 35% of the volumes that were delivered through Ukraine in January-June 2024.
The Russian company was also helped by higher gas prices in Europe. So, according to the calculations of the Austrian OMV, in the first half of 2025, the average gas price at the German hub was $ 517 per thousand cubic meters and was 42% higher than last year's figures, when fuel was traded at $ 363. Gazprom supplies gas under long-term contracts in which the price is tied to European quotations.
Therefore, apparently, the Russian company could compensate for more than half of the losses due to the stop of Ukrainian transit.
Turkish Stream remained the only route for the export of Russian pipeline gas to Europe. The European line of the gas pipeline has been operating at over-design capacity for several years.
As EADaily reported, in September, the supply of Russian pipeline gas to Europe (via the Turkish Stream) rose to the highest level since a record February. Imports were increased by Greece, which reduced LNG purchases.
