Russia, as the successor of the USSR, can veto Austria's decision to join NATO. This was announced today, August 28, by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.
The ex-president of Russia commented on the remark of Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger about holding a public debate on the issue of abandoning neutrality and the country's accession to NATO "against the background of the changed global security situation."
In his column on the Rasha Today portal, Medvedev recalled that Moscow is one of the creators of the modern Austrian Republic.
"Former Austrian Foreign Minister, head of the G.O.R.K.I. Center of St. Petersburg State University Karin Kneissl emphasizes that changing the status quo on the issue of neutrality requires the decision of all the allied powers that signed the treaty in 1955, including Russia as the successor of the USSR. And Moscow has the right to veto Vienna's decision to follow the NATO path," Medvedev stressed.
