The tanker, which previously transported Russian oil, tried to undermine off the coast of Libya. Earlier, four more vessels of Greek shipowners, which are involved in the export of oil from Russia.
"A tanker carrying 1 million barrels of oil exploded near Libya," Bloomberg reports, citing the Greek operator TMS Tankers.
According to the agency, the Vilamoura tanker is being towed to Greece, where the damage will be assessed. At the same time, the AIS data of the vessels indicate that the explosion occurred in the territorial waters of Libya.
"The representative of TMS Tankers reported that the explosion caused water intake, and the engine room of the vessel is flooded. The exact cause of the explosion is unclear," writes Bloomberg.
Earlier, four more tankers of Greek shipowners faced similar diversions. All the affected tankers had previously transported Russian oil.
A series of incomprehensible explosions has already forced owners to order an inspection of the hull of vessels by divers and underwater vehicles for the presence of mines.
