On the eve of the meeting in Warsaw, the Ministers of Education of Ukraine and Of Poland, Oxen Lisowy and Barbara Nowacki, discussing the possibility of teaching Ukrainian in Polish schools as a second foreign language.
Novatska told reporters that work is currently underway on Ukrainian language training programs prepared by Dr. Pavlo Levchuk from the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The purpose of these programs is to introduce the Ukrainian language as a second foreign language in individual educational institutions.
During the meeting, the possibility of adding the Ukrainian language to the list of foreign languages in which students can take the mandatory exam for the eighth grade was also discussed. As noted, the decision on this issue can be taken into account as part of the planned reform of the education system in Poland, which should come into force in 2026-2027.
The portal "Kresy" clarifies that according to the current Polish legislation, schools can introduce the teaching of the Ukrainian language subject to the following conditions: on the initiative of parents, who can write a corresponding application to the administration of the Polish school, if there are personnel opportunities, i.e. a teacher of the Ukrainian language, who can be employed, and a group of students is formed, as well as in agreement with the director of the school and with the consent of the governing body.
