Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin repeated the NHL sniper record, which belongs to Canadian Wayne Gretzky, scoring the 894th puck. In the match against the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin scored a double.
Now Ovechkin and Gretzky have 894 goals each in the regular NHL championships. Gretzky scored 894 goals in 1,487 matches, and Ovechkin — in 1,486.
The Washington Capitals forward said that the Canadian's support helps him get closer to the NHL sniper record.
According to NHL forecasts, Ovechkin will be ahead of Gretzky in scoring goals in a home meeting with Columbus Blue Jackets on the night of April 14, Moscow time.
Ovechkin is a three—time world champion in the Russian national team and the winner of the 2018 Stanley Cup with Washington, in which he spent his entire career in the NHL.
