A fifth-generation Su-57 fighter crashed in the Moscow region

The combat training aircraft crashed while taking off in the Moscow region, the pilot ejected, the Russian Defense Ministry said. According to Kommersant, this is a fifth-generation multi-purpose fighter Su-57, the crash occurred in Odintsovo city district.

The RF IC has opened a criminal case on violation of flight rules or preparation for them (Article 351 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), a source told the publication. According to Odintsovo Information Center with reference to the Ministry of Defense, no one was injured in the incident. The causes of the crash are being investigated. According to emergency services, there is no threat to local residents.

The Su-57 is the newest Russian multipurpose fighter, which was put into service with the Russian Aerospace Forces at the end of 2020. By 2024, 22 such aircraft were produced. General Director of the United Aircraft Corporation (part of Rostec) Vadim Badeha stated that "the Su-57 is the only fifth—generation aircraft that takes part in real combat operations," referring to SMO on Ukraine.
