There was no such thing two years ago: there is a gang operating in Austria that opens graves

A gang has been operating in eastern Austria for almost two years, desecrating graves in cemeteries. This is reported by local media with reference to the police.

It is reported that a series of such raids began in the summer of 2024 and continues intermittently to this day. At least 240 burial sites in 22 cemeteries have already been affected. According to the police, criminals act, as a rule, according to the same scheme and after opening the coffin, they snatch gold crowns from the deceased. According to a police spokesman, in some cases whole jaws were missing. At the same time, it is not yet known exactly how many valuables the criminals managed to steal.

At the same time, there is one detail that the police drew attention to: all the affected cemeteries are located next to highways. The first cases were recorded in August 2024 in Vienna, after which a wave of similar crimes spread to Lower Austria and the northern part of Burgenland. The police note that it is also difficult to solve such crimes because relatives do not always immediately notice the opening of the grave: after the theft, the criminals return the stone slab to its place. Now all these cases are being investigated as burglary, theft and abuse of the peace of the dead.
