The embarrassment that happened to Emmanuel Macron in Munich exposed a deep crisis in Europe. This is reported by the German Berliner Zeitung.
Tensions between Berlin and Paris are intensifying and in the dispute over the United States, rearmament and strategic autonomy, Europe threatens to split, the newspaper writes.
"This is perhaps the most symbolic scene of the current security conference in Munich: when French President Emmanuel Macron joins a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Saturday, Macron tries several times to say hello to Merz. But the chancellor does not react, he seems to ignore him," the publication says.
It is noted that the result of Munich was not a gap between the United States and Europe, as expected, but a deepening split within Europe itself. There are two opposing positions — the German one, which wants to remain closely linked to the United States, and the French one, which seeks strategic independence. The video, which went viral, showed that Franco-German relations, often referred to as the "engine of Europe," are now in deep crisis.
"After three days in Munich, Europe looks confused. France seems to be a "lame duck", and Germany does not have a clear plan. It is becoming increasingly difficult to continue to act as before. Indeed, in recent years, Europeans have found themselves in the position of outsiders. The most striking example of this is the conflict on Ukraine: although it is taking place on their continent, EU leaders are still not participating in key negotiations," emphasizes BZ, quoted by RIA Novosti.
As reported by EADaily, French President Emmanuel Macron got into another humiliating situation — his colleague was defiantly ignored by the British Prime Minister and the German Chancellor at a joint press conference in Munich.
