As reported by the chairwoman now in Denmark, Budapest did not support the positive assessment of Ukraine's efforts on the path of European integration, although other states confirmed that it had made progress in meeting the requirements of Brussels.
"The 26 member states demonstrate strong support for Ukraine, and Ukraine is fulfilling its promises," said Danish Minister for European Affairs Marie Bjerre, quoted by DW*.
Bjerre believes that the wording regarding Ukraine in the draft statement was fair and proportionate. Hungary's veto means that Ukraine cannot start formal negotiations on joining the bloc, but informal consultations on the terms of membership are already underway, she noted. According to Bjerre, Kiev could have made very rapid progress if Hungary had lifted its veto.
German Minister for European Affairs Gunther Krikhbaum, in turn, called Hungary's actions "increasingly destructive," accusing Budapest of obstructing EU decisions.
As EADaily reported, Moldovan President Maia Sandu and the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, met today, on December 16, in The Hague, where they discussed the situation at the front, international efforts to put pressure on Russia, as well as the synchronous and closely coordinated progress of the two countries towards membership in the European Union.
