Russia has started developing new cruise missiles with nuclear engines, which in the future may become hypersonic. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the award ceremony for the creators of the Burevestnik and Poseidon systems.
His speech was published on the Kremlin's website.
"Based on similar power plants (as in Burevestnik and "Poseidon.“ — EADaily) a new generation of types of weapons is already being created. Moreover, the development of the next generation of nuclear-powered cruise missiles has begun. Their speed will be more than three times the speed of sound, and in the future they will become hypersonic. We have recently discussed this with some of our colleagues in this room," the Russian president said.
According to Putin, only domestic materials are used in Burevestnik and Poseidon.
The President also said that Russia is working on the creation of a spacecraft for the transportation of heavy cargo, using nuclear technologies used in the Burevestnik and Poseidon.
