Vilnius and Minsk need to cooperate at least at the technical level. This was announced today, October 22, by the head of the Government of Lithuania Inga Ruginene.
Ruginen's statement was made after several dozen smuggled weather balloons allegedly from the territory of Belarus ended up in Lithuania.
"I would very much like Belarus to treat these events responsibly, no matter what political relations may be. We have to cooperate on a technical level. It is not normal that so many balloons cross our border, we must intercept them and prevent them from reaching our strategic facilities," she said.
Recall, on the night of October 22, dozens of balloons flew on the territory from Druskininkai to Vilnius district. Because of this, Vilnius Airport was closed from Tuesday evening until 6.30 am Wednesday. In addition, traffic was also suspended at night through both existing border crossings with Belarus — Myadininkai and Shalchininkai, and on Wednesday morning traffic through them was resumed.
